First Consultation

1. Registration

  • You will be asked to provide your personal particulars, contact details, preferred language of communication, drug allergies, pre-existing medical conditions and how you would like to be reminded of your subsequent appointments.

2. Anthropometric data

  • Your height and weight will be measured and your baseline Body Mass Index (BMI) calculated.
  • If you have not had an ECG done within the last 3 months, or if your condition has changed since then, an ECG will be performed prior to your consultation with the cardiologist. This is to provide him with pertinent information about your cardiovascular status, which may reduce the need for unnecessary investigations.

4. Consultation with Dr Ooi

  • A comprehensive and detailed review of your past medical history, presenting concerns, systemic symptoms, medication history, family history, occupational history, surgical history, social history, previous test reports and diagnoses will be conducted.
  • A thorough physical examination will be performed to evaluate your cardiovascular status, pick up abnormal signs, detect complications of cardiac diseases and assess your risk of developing coronary artery disease.
  • Your cardiovascular status or problems will be explained to you and any questions you may have will be answered by Dr Ooi
  • A plan of management will be discussed with you to optimize your cardiovascular health. This may involve advice on lifestyle modifications, exercise prescription, adjustment or prescription of medications, further cardiac tests, cardiac surgery or collaboration with other medical or allied health care professionals.

5. Subsequent plans and follow-up

  • Medications prescribed by Dr Ooi will be explained and dispensed to you by our trained clinic staff.
  • Any further cardiac investigations or procedures required will be arranged for you at the earliest convenient time.
  • Your next appointment date if required will be scheduled.

This may involve advice on lifestyle modifications, exercise prescription, adjustment or prescription of medications, further cardiac tests, cardiac surgery or collaboration with other medical or allied health care professionals.

4. Timing of Consultation

  • Dr Ooi aims to see all patients on schedule but there may be occasions when he is called away for a medical emergency. Our clinic staff will strive to contact all affected patients immediately, inform them of the estimated waiting time and if necessary, make alternative arrangements.

5. Investigations

  • Fasting Blood tests – Please come fasted for at least 8 hours prior to your test. Coffee, tea, milo and biscuits are available for your consumption after the test, before your consultation with Dr Ooi.
  • Exercise stress tests – Please come in your sports attire and running shoes. Bring a change of clothes if required. Water is available for your consumption after your stress test.
  • Female patients – As cardiac examination and testing often require adequate exposure of the chest, it is advisable that you wear a 2-piece outfit instead of a dress. Modesty blankets will be provided when necessary.

6. Languages

  • Dr Ooi is able to speak English, Mandarin, Hokkien fluently and basic conversational Malay and Cantonese. Language translators can be arranged with advanced notice, subject to availability.

7. Specialized cardiac procedures (eg. coronary angiogram)

  • Our clinic staff will make the necessary arrangements for any specialized cardiac procedures you may require. We will also give you instructions on how to prepare for the procedure.
  • You will need to be fasted for at least 6 hours prior to your procedure.
  • Please bring all your medical reports, X-rays, investigations and medications to the hospital
  • For day cases, patients will generally be allowed to go home after 4-6 hours if they are clinically stable.
  • For inpatient procedures (eg. coronary angioplasty), patients will stay overnight in the hospital and be discharged the next day if they are clinically stable.

8. Insurance forms

  • Please bring your insurance identification cards and forms. We will do the necessary checks, complete the forms or write up the medical reports as soon as possible.
